At first, we didn’t expect any good off-piste. Grooming was good, but the line at the base in Ischgl was by far too long for midweek and especially for the 41.50 Euros you have to pay for a day pass.

It’s been about 20 years since I last skied this resort, and a lot has changed. Most T-Bars become high-speed quads, six packs, and even 8-passenger chairs. Despite that it was very busy on the groomers, off-piste it was very quiet, and we could almost say that we were the only ones there. Still some untracked powder to be found, but the south-facing stuff was majorly affected by the sun. We even got some spring-like, off-piste skiing, and this in January.
After lunchtime, we spotted a nice, long, off-piste run right from the top, all the way down to Samnaun. We had to do it, and it was great. Some steep powder turns followed by spring stuff.

The Pension Olympia just outside of Samnaun in Pfunds will provide you very reasonable and comfortable pension style accommodation. Double rooms starting at just 25 Euros/person/night incl. breakfast or apartments for up to 6 starting at 20 Euros/person/night).

The pension is also a great place to ski various resort during your stay. Gateway to Nauders, Serfaus-Fiss, Schöneben and the Silvretta Arena Samnaun/Ischgl.

Visit Gerd and Doina Mark and say hello from Patrick

Don’t miss the tax-free shopping. If you stay in Ischgl, you can go for some shopping during the day and take the stuff back to Austria. Don’t miss checking the list of the limits you are allowed to take, for example, alcohol, meat, etc. Between the resorts on top of the mountain, you might get checked by the border control (custom). Don’t forget your ID if you intend to ski in Austria (Ischgl) or on the Swiss side of the resort.
