Product of the Season 2012/2013 – Powdermania Gold Award

RESQSKI – Revolutionary electronic ski finder
Resqski_main

They did it! Ever since I had to search my own ski in waist deep powder while my friends enjoyed another run in untracked deep powder I always wanted to have something on my skis to allow searching them when lost.

After a long 12 year wait and many talks about it with friends it finally is on the market. So far it sounds like I’m part of it but no, unfortunately for me it was always only an idea but now the guys of RESQSKI lunched yesterday at the London Ski and Snowboard show there new product

I could not test it yet under real condition as London is not well know for having 1m of snow outside of the Earls Court however playing with it and talking to the guys at stand D85 is already reason enough to call it “Product of the season 2012/2013”

Price UK £ 88  (-20% VAT outside of the UK) – great value compared to a lost ski

RESQSKI LAUNCHES AT SKI & SNOWBOARD SHOW 2012
–    Revolutionary electronic ski finder for powder skiers can locate skis buried up to 1 metre in the snow from 30 metres –

(London, 31/10/12) RESQSKI (www.resqski.com), the electronic ski finder for powder skiers, is being launched at the Ski & Snowboard Show, 31st October to 4th November.
For off-piste skiers and ski tourers losing a ski is an ever-present fear. The ski planes under the powder, disappearing in seconds, and can end up 10 metres away from where you fall. At best it’s frustrating. At worst, it’s downright dangerous.
Using RF (radio frequency) technology, RESQSKI can find a lost ski buried up to a metre in snow and from as far away as 30 metres. A credit card-sized handheld transceiver communicates with homing tags attached to the ski that lead you to the lost ski using flashing lights and sonic beeps. The lights move from red to green and the beeps get ever louder and more frequent as you get closer to the ski.
Chris Chadwick, CEO and Creator of RESQSKI Ltd, said:
“The idea was born out of my own experience.  Skiing off-piste with my son George near Veysonnaz in Switzerland, I make a careless turn that catapulted me 10 metres below my skis. I quickly found one but it took me 45 minutes of hard digging to find the other.

Two days later I was skiing in Zermatt with my nephew Charlie – a ski instructor in the resort and an off-piste aficionado. He admitted that he had lost no fewer than 3 skis in the past few seasons and a good pair of off-piste skis can cost £700! The thought occurred that there must be a better solution for powder hounds. The idea for RESQSKI was born!”

RESQSKI comprises a small handheld transceiver, two low-profile base tags which seat two removable homing tags. The tags are fully waterproof and shockproof and are easily fixed next to the ski’s bindings using a powerful adhesive sticker. The homing tag has an on/off switch so you can get through the season without mucking about changing batteries.  Each handheld can support two sets of skis. Fuller details are contained in the Q&A below and a full spec available in the online user guide, www.resqski.com/user-manual/.

Chadwick believes there is huge potential for his new product:
“There is nothing like the RESQSKI tag available world-wide, yet the need is cogent. We will start by selling online, and building a network of ski retail and off-piste specialists in Europe. We then intend to expand world-wide especially in North America and Japan.”

RESQSKI is exhibiting (and available for sale) at Stand D85 at the Ski & Snowboard Show at Earl’s Court, London, from 31st October to 4th November.

About RESQSKI
RESQSKI Q & A
Q: WHAT IS RESQSKI?
A:  RESQSKI is an electronic ski finder for powder skiers that locates lost skis submerged under the snow.
Q: WHAT’S THE PROBLEM BEING SOLVED?
A:  For most skiers who stay on the piste, there is no problem.  For off-piste skiers, losing a ski is an ever-present fear. The ski planes under the powder and disappears in seconds. It can end up 10 metres away from where you fall and take 10 minutes/a half hour – or never – to find. It can ruin your day and, at best, disrupt the enjoyment of the rest of the ski group waiting for you.
Q: WHAT OTHER SOLUTIONS ARE OUT THERE?
A:  There are 2: leashes and ribbons. They are both time consuming and fiddly. Ribbons easily rip and fall out. Leashes can be dangerous due to the sharp edges of the skis potentially slicing through your ski clothes.
Q:  HOW DOES RESQSKI WORK?
A:  It works using RF (radio frequency) technology. A credit card–sized handheld transceiver communicates with specially developed homing tags that lead you to the lost ski using flashing lights and sonic beeps. The lights move from red to green and the beeps get ever louder and more frequent as you get closer to the ski.
Q:  WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OFF?
A:  A handheld transceiver and two ski tags. The ski tags comprise a base tag attached to the ski immediately in front of, or behind, the binding using a powerful adhesive; a removable homing tag and a ‘dummy’ tag.
Each tag is ‘registered’ to a specific numbered button on the Handheld so that your skis can be searched for individually by the Handheld. Another set of ski tags (purchased separately) can be registered to buttons 3 & 4 on the Handheld.
The tags are designed so that the Homing tag can be taken out of the Base Tag for storage.  A Dummy tag is supplied to fill the Base Tag to give a clean, streamlined appearance when RESQSKI is not needed for operation.
Q: WHAT ELSE IS GOOD ABOUT IT?
A: RESQSKI’s ski homing tags are waterproof and shockproof with a novel switching mechanism that means batteries hardly ever have to be replaced.
Q: WHO ARE RESQSKI?
A:  RESQSKI LTD is a new UK-based company set up by two businessmen, Chris Chadwick and Colin Brotherston.
Q: WHERE IS IT MADE?
A:  RESQSKI is a new product designed in the UK (patent pending). The core technology has been provided by UK based Loc8tor Ltd, a multi-award winning company specialising in location-based devices and RF consumer electronics. The tag casing is manufactured by specialist UK based injection moulding company, Miniplas, of Welwyn Garden. The product is finally assembled by RESQSKI in their facilities near Portsmouth.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
A:  It will retail at £88
Q: WHERE CAN I BUY IT?
A:  Currently at www.resqski.com. Our plan is to have selective distribution through ski retail outlets and other specialist off-piste sellers.
The Team
Chris Chadwick, CEO and Creator
Chris’s first entrepreneurial venture was as an ice cream vendor in New York at the age of 19. He dumbly thought it a good idea to work for big companies like Cadbury Schweppes, American Express and Axa and finally figured out that life’s too short to play out other people’s ideas.
Colin Brotherston, Technical and Production Director
A Design Engineer, Colin has worked across a variety of industry sectors. He launched his own company, Concept Design Matters Ltd, in the field of precision mechanism design and mechatronics.
Charlie Chadwick, European Sales & Marketing Director
Up to now Charlie’s lifestyle choice has been – “ski the unskiable”.  As a full-time instructor he worked in Zermatt in Switzerland and Treblecone in New Zealand. He’s also competed in giant slalom and slalom as well as free-ride competitions, including North Face Free-Ski Open in NZ. Qualified in Mountain Leadership (European mountain safety qualification) and an expert powder skier, he was the perfect choice to join our team to help develop RESQSKI.
